If you want the latest and greatest iPhone from Apple, the new iPhone 11 Pro Max will top out at $1,449 for 512 gigabytes before adding Apple Care and accessories such as a snazzy case.

The entry level on a contemporary iPhone is $699, $50 lower than  the phone the 11 follows, the XR, which sold for $749.

Savvy consumers know that when Apple releases its fall phone lineup, it often slashes the prices of older phones, and that’s exactly what it did Tuesday with the 2019-2020 crop of phones.

The XR starts for $599 while the 8, which had sold for $599, is $449 – the entry point for anyone who wants a new iPhone.

Apple historically updates its operating system, iOS, and eliminates certain phones from support each year when it does an update.

This year, the new iOS 13, releasing Sept. 19, will support only phones from the iPhone 6S (2015) and up, acing out the iPhone 6 and 5S.

Based on historical patterns, consumers would get only three years of life from the iPhone 8 before Apple stopped supporting that phone.

Apple discontinued the 2018 releases, XS and XS Max. In 2018, Apple stopped offering the X phone.

The new phones all start with 64 gigabytes of storage, which is heftier than in years past, when Apple offered 16 GB and 32 GB storage. In recent years, apps have become data hogs, eating away at storage when phone cameras shoot high-resolution photos and videos.

Consumers can save a little cash on the new phones by picking up the Apple Card, a credit card that offers 3% back on Apple products. That $1,449 iPhone 11 Pro Max would cost $1,405 with the discount.
