UK Businessman Sentenced in China for Espionage

Ian J Stones, a British business executive with four decades of experience in China, including collaborations with major US companies like General Motors and Pfizer, has been imprisoned in Beijing on charges of espionage. The case, which remained undisclosed until recently, has now been confirmed by Chinese authorities.

Stones was convicted in 2022 for “obtaining intelligence for overseas actors” and subsequently sentenced to a five-year prison term. This decision follows a period of six years during which Stones had mysteriously disappeared, leaving many questions about his whereabouts and situation.

According to Laura Stones, the daughter of the jailed businessman, her father has not admitted to the accusations leveled against him. She stated that despite maintaining his innocence, he has resolved to respect the legal process and serve his sentence under Chinese law.
