These businesses are closing Sept. 20

Several businesses have joined the call for climate change and are closing Friday for the Global Climate Strike.

Businesses including Ben & Jerry’s, Burton, Lush, Patagonia and SodaStream say they are closing down – for the day or for several hours – to encourage their employees and customers to participate in the strike.

“We’re going to disrupt our ‘business as usual’ on Sept 20 to demonstrate our solidarity with global climate strikers,” Ben & Jerry’s said in a statement. “We believe we all must change the way we live, and the way we do business.”

The protests are timed to begin a week of activism at the United Nations, including a Youth Climate Summit on Saturday and a U.N. Climate Action Summit on Monday. A second strike is planned for Sept. 27.

“The climate crisis is an emergency and can no longer be ignored. It is our responsibility as leaders to hear and raise the voice of the young generation today and act now.” SodaStream CEO Eyal Shohat said in a statement. “Caring for the planet is at the core of our company, and we have to walk the talk.”

Online companies are also participating.

According to the official strike website, Globalclimatestrike.net, there’s a digital global climate strike planned with more than 6,000 websites participating, several which will “go green” by displaying banners.
